Become a...

'How to become a' is a section all about professions, skills and people. Sarah Berry says, 'If you have the right skills, the necessary commitment and conviction, you can do the job you want in the location you want. You can have everything you ever dreamt of. If you are fed up with your job, you are not alone. Eighty-six per cent of people go through the motions at work. If you are unhappy about your job or unsure of what career to pursue, we can help you. It is never too late to change career.'

Career Advice

People tend to seek career advice only if they are having a career crisis. This could include facing redundancy, dealing with a difficult boss, being turned down for a job promotion, receiving a poor appraisal or finding it tricky to move out of a comfort zone. When in a career crisis people look for hope.

  • 'What can you do for me?'
  • 'Help me to feel alive.'
  • 'What skills do I need to do …'
  • 'Do you know what I am looking for?'
  • 'Can you help me?'

A job is no longer for life. You can expect at least one big career change in your lifetime and it could be as many as three. Regular career check-ups are now a really worthwhile investment especially as both the job market and your career needs are constantly changing. In the twenties, money tends to be a big motivator; during the thirties stability and comfort come high on the list; in the forties time is what people tend to look for; and in the fifties and sixties, as the financial burden lessens, people look for job fulfilment. If you are going to spend between 40 and 60 hours a week at work, isn't it worth putting some effort into finding the right job and career for you?

Changing Career

The good news is that changing career doesn't necessarily mean starting from scratch. You will have skills that are transferable into a new role. It can be an easy transition.

You know it is time to change career when:

  • You feel as if you are on an endless treadmill.
  • You feel as if you are stuck in your career.
  • You would like your favourite hobby to be your real job.
  • You feel as if you would like to try something else.
  • You spend time at work sorting out your hobby.
  • You feel as if you just work to pay the bills each month.
  • You are embarrassed by what you do for a living.
  • You don't get your needs met at work anymore.
  • You have lost the spark for what you do.

Do your homework

There is plenty of advice under each profession to help you change career easily. It is advisable to set aside some time to read and research your chosen profession.

In addition it is advisable to do some self-appraisal work. What are you good at? What needs do you need to fulfil? List down on a piece of paper what you value about work, your core skills, your personal strengths and your ambitions. What did you learn about yourself? Try to talk to others in the same profession or job that you want.

If you need some guidance about what to do, you could fill in an on-line personality profile. It is a very positive thing to do and it will certainly highlight all that you have to offer an employer - Whether you are starting out in your career or mid-way through it, you may find this very useful thing to do. The career guidelines profile that we offer will highlight the jobs or areas of work would suit you. http://www.careerconsultants.co.uk/products/products-thomas.asp

I will be there for you

If you find yourself in the midst of a career crisis or need some help with your job change, I am here for you. Whatever you need whether it is advice, support or encouragement, I can be there for you. First of all, I have three pieces of advice for you.

1. Trust your gut feelings

Pay attention to what you feel. Listen to your gut feelings, your vibes or whatever you choose to call them. Young people talk freely and openly and are unembarrassed about what they want to be when they are older. Very often these 'gentle' desires are shaped, quashed or laughed at by the people around them. And these desires 'get lost' in pain, hurt, embarrassment or justification. So, it is important that whatever age you are that you get in touch with what you feel.

2. Get fresh

To get in touch with what you feel you need to be fresh. When you feel fresh your ideas, thoughts and feelings are positive ones. Create an atmosphere where you let your ideas come up. When do you feel free? What are you doing? Are you on a beach, walking in the mountains, dancing, playing your favourite sport, doing your favourite hobby or sitting quietly absorbing the beauty of your environment? Are you alone or are you with someone? How do you look? What are you thinking about? What are you wearing? What ideas come up? What dreams do you have?

3. Listen to the signs

You are constantly being given ideas about how to create your future. Are you hearing, seeing and responding to these signs? Try not to ignore signs such as chance meetings, missed appointments, feelings you should go somewhere, ring someone or follow a different path. Instead ask yourself, 'What is the importance of this situation? What can I gain from this? When you stop controlling events and follow the 'real' path you were meant to follow, you may feel as if you have been cut free from the known. But guess what? As soon as you are free you have created a vacuum and as soon as there is a vacuum present the other path starts to become more apparent and new events unfold.

Stepping off the path you have always followed or felt you should follow is similar to flying. You are free to go where you want to go. How amazing is that? The path of freedom is less well trodden than the other motorway. You have to trust yourself more and trust that good things will be drawn to you. Now some people may find trusting, responding and listening to their inner genius scary. They may feel that there is nothing to grab hold of and that they are going to crash or dangle in mid-air.

Let me reassure you that it doesn't work like this. When you say 'yes' to following your inner genius you set fire to it and your expectation is raised. In other words, your inner genius is like an inner magnet, it draws what you need to it. It is a good idea therefore to expect the very best. If you expect your idea to work it will, if you expect it to be tricky it will be. Focus on your idea, trust your idea and let the answer about how to carry it out come to you naturally.
